How Getting Older Changes Our Eyes

Happy Older Couple Glasses 1280×480

Aging affects us in all kinds of ways, and that includes our eyesight.

How Age Relates to Sight-Threatening Conditions

Conditions like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, macular degeneration, and cataracts all become much more likely the older we get. Many of these can be delayed, managed, treated, or even reversed. Science and technology are improving all the time, so the prognoses for these conditions are likely to get better in years to come. Early detection is critical, though, which is why regular eye exams become increasingly crucial as we age.

Common Minor Vision Changes that Come With Age

Not all the ways age can impact vision are serious, but it’s still important to be aware of them because they do take getting used to.

  • Requiring more light to see. The older we get, the more light we tend to need to see clearly. You might find yourself making more and more use of reading lamps!
  • Sensitivity to glare. This one is particularly distracting while driving, due to the reflections of other cars. Polarized lenses can be a life-saver here!
  • Difficulty seeing small print and details. Most of us will need reading glasses or bifocals as we get older because of something called presbyopia.
  • Changes in color perception. Sometimes the lens in the eye can become slightly discolored, which impacts the colors we see.
  • Decreased tear production. We need plenty of tears to keep our eyes healthy and protected from outside irritants. Make sure to bring up any symptoms of dry eye, such as watering, burning, blurred vision, and eye discomfort to the eye doctor.

There’s a lot you can do to maintain healthy vision well into old age. Living a healthy lifestyle is extremely important. Staying active, eating healthy, and avoiding harmful habits like smoking all reduce the chances of developing sight-threatening conditions. Wearing UV-blocking sunglasses while outside in the sun is also essential because UV damage is cumulative over the course of our lives. In addition, make sure you are scheduling a yearly eye exam for the continued health of your eyes!

Vision Therapy Success Story

Our Five Points Eye Care Vision Therapy Clinic helps kids who are struggling to read and have problems with their schoolwork. We also work to give them back their confidence. Caleb is one such success story. Caleb had a lack of focus going from the board at school to the papers on his desk as well as convergence problems and possible dyslexia.

After beginning Vision Therapy, he has expressed more of an interest in sports and has more confidence while playing them. Because of his evaluation here, he will be tested for dyslexia, which might have gone undetected otherwise. Caleb’s family feels that Vision Therapy is “quality care with kindness” and would definitely recommend it to others.

The Fred Award

AprilVaughn2014 previewEvery month, we have our employees nominate another employee for our “Fred Award.” A “Fred” is someone who goes out of their way to uphold our practice core values of Excellence in Eye Care, Patients Come First, and Lead by Example. As a practice, we not only want our employees to come to work to get the day’s job done, but to strive to work harder each and every day for the sake of the practice as a whole.

The Fred Award for the month of December goes to April! April makes sure that everyone’s shifts are covered and everyone is happy. In addition, she is always ready and willing to provide support wherever it may be needed. She basically saved the day multiple times this month! We love you, April, thank you for everything you do!
