Solar Eclipse in Athens, GA

Here in Athens, the eclipse on Monday, April 8th will be about 84% totality (at about 3:04 PM), not a total eclipse, but still stunning to see.

The most important thing to do when looking at an eclipse is to wear eclipse viewing glasses.  These should have a marking ISO 12312-2:2015.

You can check out the American Astronomical Society's list of approved safe solar viewers to make sure the brand you have are safe.

You also need to ensure the lenses aren’t scratched, punctured, torn, loose, or otherwise damaged.

We will have a limited number of eclipse viewing glasses at Five Points Eye Care for our patients to use during the event.

Do not look at the eclipse with regular sunglasses, directly without any protection or with a telescope or binoculars.  If you do so, you risk damaging your retinas, sometimes permanently.

If you experience discomfort or vision problems after viewing the eclipse, schedule an eye examination with us as soon as possible.

Some vision problems may include:

  • loss of your central vision
  • distorted vision
  • altered color vision.
