What is Colorblindness and What Causes it?

What is colorblindness?

  • Colorblindness is the inability to perceive certain or all colors. There are different types of colorblindness, including red-green colorblindness, blue-yellow colorblindness, and complete colorblindness. Red-green colorblindness is the most common form, and it affects more men than women. About 1 in 12 men are affected by red-green colorblindness, and 1 in every 200 women are affected. On the opposite end of the spectrum, it is very rare to be completely colorblind. Achromatopsia is the name associated with this condition, and it only affects about 1 in 30,000 people.

What causes colorblindness?

  • Processing color is a complicated process in which light (which contains all wavelengths of color) enters the cornea of the eye and passes through the lens and jelly-like substance in the eye, then hits the wavelength-sensitive cells in the back of the eye. These wavelength sensitive cells are known as “cones.” The chemicals in the cones of the eye send the wavelength information through the optic nerve and to the brain.
  • In people who are color blind or unable to perceive certain colors, the cones of the eye lack some wavelength-sensitive chemical. This means there will be no trigger for certain colors to be sent from the optic nerve to the brain, therefore the color isn’t processed.
  • Reasons for this missing wavelength-sensitive chemical is often due to genetics. If your parents aren’t able to process color, you have a higher likelihood of also not being able to process that same color. Some other causes for colorblindness include diseases, medications, and injury.

Vision Therapy Success Story

Our Five Points Eye Care Vision Therapy Clinic helps kids who are struggling to read and have problems with their schoolwork. We also work to give them back their confidence. Caleb is one such success story.

Caleb had a lack of focus going from the board at school to the papers on his desk as well as convergence problems and possible dyslexia. After beginning Vision Therapy, he has expressed more of an interest in sports and has more confidence while playing them. Because of his evaluation here, he will be tested for dyslexia, which might have gone undetected otherwise. Caleb’s family feels that Vision Therapy is “quality care with kindness” and would highly recommend it to others.

The Fred Award

Resim2Every month, we have our employees nominate another employee for our “Fred Award.” A “Fred” is someone who goes out of their way to uphold our practice core values of Excellence in Eye Care, Patients Come First, and Lead by Example. As a practice, we not only want our employees to come to work to get the day’s job done, but to strive to work harder each and every day for the sake of the practice as a whole.

The Fred Award for the month of September goes to Kenzie!

Kenzie always puts patient care first no matter the situation. She is extrodinary at ensuring that every encounter someone has with our office is positive and memorable. Thank you for all your hard work Kenzie, we love you!
