Expectations

The patient (and parent) can expect the visual system to be trained so that symptoms are relieved if the program is followed as prescribed. There are regularly scheduled follow up appointments with the supervising doctor throughout therapy so that progress is monitored and the program is continually evolved to meet the visual needs of the patient. The patient is expected to have weekly vision therapy appointments and do daily homework to strengthen and train the visual system. Non-compliance will adversely affect the success of the program.

Training session description

Vision therapy is typically done in the office once per week for a 50 min. - 60 min. session, with daily homework done for 15-20 minutes. This schedule can be varied to accommodate differing needs and schedules. Other options include:

• Twice weekly in-office sessions can be implemented for 30 min., with daily homework.
• Twice weekly in-office sessions for 50-60 min. alleviating the need for daily homework.
• Home based vision therapy with monthly monitoring and new programming.
• Home based computer vision therapy programs with disk monitoring.

Times available

Vision Therapy session are available Monday through Friday. Hourly sessions begin on the half hour, and are currently available from 12:30 through 5:30 pm.

Problems that may warrant a Vision Therapy examination:

Reading problems:

• Losing place when reading or when looking from the board to paper
• Decreased reading comprehension
• Complaints of headaches or eye-strain after reading
• Rubbing the eyes while reading
• Holding books closer than 10 inches away
• Moving head while reading
• Using a finger to keep place while reading
• Omitting letters, words or phrases
• Complaints of the words moving around on the page
• Pages of the book changing colors while reading
• Excessive blinking or watering eyes during reading
• Tension or frustration during reading or close work
• Blurry vision while reading

General complaints/problems:

• Covering one eye or turning the head to block an eye
• Reversals of letters, numbers or words after age seven
• Squinting
• Sloppy handwriting and excessive erasures
• Headaches in forehead region
• Tilting of the head
• Diagnosis of “Lazy eye”
• Avoidance of tasks requiring sustained visual attention
• An eye turning in or out
• Difficulty remembering spelling words, math facts
